Where to stay in Negombo

Beachfront resorts, Geoffrey Bawa-designed retreats, family guesthouses and airport hotels — the right base depends on your flight times, budget and how much you want to be in the action.

Negombo is where Sri Lanka goes to bed before and after its flights, so it has an unusually wide choice of places to stay for a town of its size. The good news: prices are lower than in the south-coast resorts, and even mid-range hotels usually have a pool.

The main decision is location. The beach strip at Ethukala is the lively heart of tourist Negombo; the lagoon side and Waikkal in the north are quieter and more upmarket; and the hotels around Katunayake and Seeduwa are the best choice for middle-of-the-night flights.

The best areas to stay in Negombo

Four areas, four quite different experiences.

Ethukala & Lewis Place (beach strip)

The main tourist strip north of town, along Porutota Road and Lewis Place: beachfront hotels, restaurants, bars, spas and tour desks within walking distance.

  • Walk to restaurants and the beach
  • Widest choice at every budget
  • About 30 minutes from the airport

Lagoon side & the quiet south

Along the lagoon and the narrow strip between lagoon and sea south of town (Pamunugama road): serene, green and home to some of Negombo’s most stylish retreats.

  • Lagoon sunsets and birdlife
  • Boutique and wellness hotels
  • Quieter, but you will need tuk-tuks

Kochchikade & Waikkal (north)

Ten to twenty kilometres north of Negombo, where the beaches become emptier and resorts spread out in large gardens beside the sea and the Maha Oya river.

  • Empty beaches and big gardens
  • Resort-style holidays
  • Further from town and the airport

Katunayake, Seeduwa & Kotugoda (airport)

Hotels 5–20 minutes from the terminal, ideal for late-night arrivals and dawn departures. Some are simple transit hotels; others are genuinely lovely.

  • Minutes from the terminal
  • Many offer airport shuttles
  • Little to do nearby
